Originating in Japan in the 1950s Pearl Izumi is a brand with a long history in creating effective road cycle clothing.
Despite being created in the 1950s it wasn't until the 80s when the brand first started getting recognised around the world, when it was named as official sponsor for the Coors Cycling Team. The brand went from strength to strength and is now clothing sponsor for the World Tour team BMC Racing which is based in the USA.
Pearl Izumi have brought a number of innovative products to the world of road cycling clothes including the popular BOA system for tightening cycling shoes, ultra-light micro-fibres for their clothing and 4d chamois pad technology to improve the comfort of cyclists everywhere.
The BOA closure system is an innovation that has worked its way through to the professional cycling scene, using a wheel mechanism to close and tighten the shoe whilst adding a quick release by simply turning the wheel the opposite direction. This enables each shoe to fit comfortably and be easily adjustable whilst on the bike -much safer than fiddling with ratchet fastenings whilst descending. The majority of Pearl Izumi's cycling shoes - both for road and mountain bikers - now employ this system and have been followed by many popular brands.
Their technical advancements and brand quality have led them to become one of the most popular cycling clothing brands in the world, easily on a par with the likes of Rapha and Castelli in terms of quality and often at a cheaper price point. Their products can be seen out on the roads on all kinds of cyclist from the casual rider to the club cyclist who competes in local leagues.
